Shared Baby　(2011.2019)

This project reflects on the forms, relationships, and possibilities of family as they shift with the evolution of society and technology.

In 2016, as part of medical treatment for a woman with mitochondrial DNA disease, a child was born carrying the genetic material of three parents. Research into in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) and related fields points toward a future in which children with the genetic information of three, four, five, or more parents may become possible. For the child, this could mean greater access to genetic, financial, and emotional resources; for the parents, a reduction in the various costs of childbirth and child-rearing. Yet it is equally easy to imagine the many complications that would arise.

At the same time, deeper questions surface: why do we believe in monogamy and blood ties, and why do we desire children in the first place? Alongside monogamy — the one-to-one relationship — the word polyamory, denoting love involving multiple partners, is increasingly heard. Infidelity, divorce, remarriage. Are we, as human beings, even built to spend an entire life with a single partner? Furthermore, multiple people sharing a single child might offer one answer to the dilemma of wanting children while believing the world would be better off with fewer people.

We have already learned to share things that were once considered private possessions — cars, homes — through well-designed service systems like car-sharing and Airbnb. What systems, services, and social arrangements might allow us to overcome the challenges and successfully raise a child together across multiple parents?

The work takes the form of recorded video from role-playing workshops using products and board games designed for children with multiple genetic parents, alongside interviews with a child psychologist, a person raising children in a multigenerational shared house, a legal scholar, and an egg-freezing researcher.

2016年、ミトコンドリアDNAに問題がある女性の医療の一環で3人の親の遺伝子を引き継ぐ子供が産まれました。体外配偶子形成(IVG: in vitro gametogenesis)の研究等の先には更に3人、４人、５人等、複数親の遺伝情報を持つ子供が作れる可能性があり、子供にとっては 遺伝子や経済、愛情のリソースが増え、親は出産育児にかかわる様々のコストが軽減される等、多くの利点と共に様々な問題が発生することが容易に想像できます。

同時に何故、私たちは一夫一婦制や血縁主義を信じ子供を欲しいと思うのか、といった疑問も浮上します。一対一の関係のmonogamyに対して、複数愛を表すpolyamoryいう言葉も最近よく耳にするようになってきました。浮気や離婚、再婚。私たちはそもそも一人の相手と一生共に過ごせるように出来ているのでしょうか？更に、複数で一人の子供を持つということが「これ以上人間を増やさない方がよい、でも子供は欲しい」というジレンマへの一つの解であるかもしれません。

しかし私達は以前は占有物であった車や家もカーシェアリングやairbnbのようにシェアリングエコノミーと言われる、良くデザインされたサービスシステムの登場により共有することが出来るようになって来ました。

私達はどのようなシステムやサービス、工夫があれば、様々な問題を乗り越えて子供を複数の親達とうまく子育てできるのでしょうか？

複数人の遺伝的親をもつ子供のためのプロダクトやボードゲームを使ったロールプレイング ワークショップの記録動画。また児童心理学者、多世代型シェアハウスで子育てをしている人、法学者、卵子凍結研究者、などのインタビューを通じ考察します。
